Attack on Titan goes beyond categorization in many ways. At its core, it's a shnen franchise, packed with action and intrigue, while often traversing the worlds of horror or science fiction, and even dabbling in comedy when the situation calls for it.
Don't get me wrong, though, because the series is incredibly dark, and it even surpasses the Titans devouring everyone. There is a gruesome and sinister narrative underlying everything that has brought humanity to this point.
It's gloomy, gripping and merciless. Even the soldiers with a firm grip on the situation, like Levi, operated with a kind of resignation that had dulled their senses to the bloody carnage. For seasoned veterans, this is just another day in hell, and it could easily prove to be the last.
Think of it as pragmatic misery if you will, but you can never really prepare for heart-wrenching bombs, because they come so brilliantly out of nowhere. Feeling safe and secure? Titan's plot twist will rock at your door and devour you, comfortably.
Most of the bizarre imagery of the Titans has made an indelible mark on anime history, and really, that's only scratching the surface, as their human counterparts on their feet are just as alluring. Needless to say, it just has to be watched to be fully appreciated.
With all that said, it's time to tie up your ODM kit, equip a few extra bars, and pack a delicious lunch...don't let yourself be one!
